The human billboard conspiracy
@ 2005-09-27 - 10:08:52A couple of years back, I used to work with a colleague who would cover herself in labels. Moschino, Vuitton, Cartier, Dior, Miyake, Balmain - she wore the lot, very often in confusing combination.
Said colleague duly thought herself a sophisticated and successful woman. All well and good.
But...
why, exactly, do we willingly accept that it's an expression of individuality to wear other people's names all over us?

A portrayal of an image which subconsciously may extrude wealth perhaps?
Look at me I am healthy, rich and successful. Come mate with me...
Just a thought....

It's not meant to be an expression of individuality- these people are willingly following the herd, one they think, erroneously, is a rarefied one, made up of celebrities and so on. "Look at me," their heavily mortgaged ensembles scream, "I'm in the know. I'm one of the cream". My peeve is with the designers who sensing a backlash some years ago anent the the excess of the '80s have ceased making the types of (at least somewhat smart) outfits your colleague once wore so proudly and now litter their catwalks with such extremely casual tripe, all based on jeans and t-shirts. I suspect today she's a Jennifer Anniston wannabe with rips at her knees and flip-flops and carrying the very same handbag that Carrie had in Sex and the City.
Sheesh!

I don't think individuals exist anymore. Try going to a Goth club in trendy clothes and watch the non-conformists treat you like a leper! Maybe Bjork was an individual when she wore that Duvet.

Well... if all she could afford were labels... warmer than post-its, maybe?

Individuals do exist, they're just not putting themselves "out there", so to speak.

Individuals don't feel the need to spend extortionate amounts of money on clothes! Individuals favourite shop is the reduced to clear rack!
